In a consistently changing industry, Orlando Dixon is striving to challenge the status quo. His primary musical goal is to create art that speaks about the human condition in a manner that is relatable to everyone on some level; thereby elevating music to a point where it celebrates longevity and embodies substance. As a recipient of an Artist Grant, and with the release of his first studio album, Orlando came closer to achieving that goal. “LISTEN: The EP” is a collection of eight songs with a variety of melodic sounds that range from Reggae, Rap, and EDM to R&B; while each lyrically resonate a message about common experiences shared by all. Following his debut he released his signature song #BlackBoyJoy, a truth telling narrative about the challenges faced by people of color today and resilience in the face of adversity. Orlando believes it will be the impetus that will fuel a continual unveiling of his all-embracing music catalog.
"I recognize that what I do may not be for everyone. My intention is to have a level of transparency in my artistry that allows people to connect, and say things in a way that is sometimes raw but very relatable."
Much like his music, Orlando’s artistic journey also has been a melting pot of various experiences. At the age of 15, he was offered a deal with a major label. After graduating from Berklee College of Music he focused his attention on songwriting and vocal production, with credits that included a top 20 record on Billboard's Urban AC chart, and working with the likes of Grammy award winner Regina Belle. One of his most memorable achievements has been his time as a contestant on Season 4 of NBC TV’s The Voice; where he was a member of both Team Usher and Team Adam, moving forward one battle shy of the live playoffs.
"That experience changed my life. I was in a space where I was figuring out who I was, and how to tap into my potential. That moment really gave me the validation I needed to stay motivated and keep pushing."
Orlando’s stint on the show led to work as a background vocalist for Zac Brown Band, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, One Republic and K. Michelle. In 2017, he ventured outside of music and started his own clothing line #BlackBoyJoy® Apparel, based on his song of the same title. Just one year later Orlando was cast as an original member of Disney Music Group’s new acappella vocal group DCappella, going on tour in 2019. With new business ventures and creative opportunities under his belt, Orlando hopes to make strides with his message and further solidify his place in the industry.
